The correct answer is A. The Civil War began.

Fort Sumter was technically in Confederate territory. However, Lincoln and the US government did not recognize the Confederacy as a different country. When  the Confederates demanded the Union troops move, they refused. This led to an attack by the Confederates on Fort Sumter. This was considered the first battle of the Civil War.
