Subtract 4 from both sides of the equation. It looks familiar now right? (y=mx+b is a linear equation)

It is linear because when graphed, it makes a straight line.
Without graphing, you can put the equation in slope intercept form, which guarantees a linear line.
y=mx+b
y=2x-4
