The election of 1876 featured two candidates: Rutherford B. Hayes (R) and Samuel J. Tilden (D). Tilden won the popular vote, but the results were disputed. During a review of the votes, Republicans and Democrats met secretly to decide the winner. Democrats agreed to let Hayes win if the Republicans took their troops out of the South. The Republicans agreed. Hayes won the presidency and control of the South was handed to the Democrats. This lack of monitoring effectively ended Reconstruction.
