Feudalism was the fusion of economic, legal, cultural and military customs prevalent in Euurope between 9th and 15th centures. It was a way of organizing society around relationships derived from the holding of land in exchange of labor or servie.
In this system king or monarch was the absolute ownere of all the land in the kingdom. He was at the top of feudal pyramid. Below the king/monarch were nobles.
The nobility coposed of pepole who held land or office in exchange for allegiance and military service to the monarch. They reported directly to the king and were very powerful. They distributed their land among Lords. Lords ran their manors. They used to maintain army for the king or monarch.
Vassals were the people who were granted possession of the land by the lord and the land was called fief, in exchange for the protection and the use of land, the vassal used to provide some sort of service to the lord.
Poor rural farm workers were called peasents. They had their own lands. The peasents who woked on lord's land were called serfs. They paid dues in return for the use of land. Both peasents and serfs paid the corps they produces, animals they killed or labour or some thing that they produced to the lord.
Knights were also vassals. They served as bodyguard, elite fighter or a mercenary for his lord. They used to get payments in the form of land holdings. They were above the peasents and serfs in the hierarchy.
