Explanation:The Union was originally attempting to get the Confederation to return to the US. But once President Lincoln made the Emancipation Proclamation effective on January 1, 1863, that focus changed.  The Proclamation granted slaves freedom in all states.  This made many people of color join the Union's Army, to fight for equality and human rights.
