Your towns public library is building a new wheelchair ramp to its entrance. By law the maximum angle of incline for the ramp is 4.76 degrees. The ramp will have a vertical rise of 2 ft. What is the shortest horizontal distance that the ramp can span?

To find the horizontal distance, use trigonometry ratio (tan)
tan α = [tex] \dfrac{opposite}{adjacent} [/tex]

plug in the numbers
tan 4.76° = [tex] \dfrac{2}{\text{horizonal distance}} [/tex]
horizontal distance = [tex]\dfrac{2}{\text{tan 4.76}}[/tex]
horizontal distance = [tex]\dfrac{2}{0.083}[/tex]
horizontal distance = 24

The shortest horizontal distance is approximately 24 ft
